Unusual 'balloon-like' buds open into beautiful blooms.
Beautiful open, delicately veined blooms sit above attractive blue-green foliage. Delightfully versatile subjects for the perennial border and extremely good for pots or as cutflowers. Some plants may flower in the first year.
Balloon flower is an upright herbaceous perennial native to eastern Asia. The blue violet bell-shaped flowers (and their bloated buds) appear through summer atop stems clad with paired or whorled blue-green leaves. The stems bleed a milky sap when cut.
For best growth, plant this perennial in full to part sun and fertile, well drained soil. Plants emerge late in spring so it is best to mark their place. Deadhead to promote extended bloom.
This long-lived perennial works well in mixed borders and cottage gardens. It makes a fine cut flower.
