Datura metel grows in the wild in all the warmer parts of the world, such as India and is cultivated worldwide for its chemical and ornamental properties.
The plant is an annual herb growing up to 3 ft. high. The pleasantly-scented 6-8 in. white single flowers.
Each flowers lasts only one night. From an unusual cigar-shaped flower bud, each flower will unravel in the evening to reveal a fragrant trumpet-shaped bloom that only lasts until noon the following day. Flowers will typically bloom intermittently from mid-summer to frost. Flowers are followed by thorny, spherical fruit. Plants belong to the nightshade family and all parts are extremely toxic.
Datura is similar to Brugmansia, except the trumpets of the latter are larger, last for several days and droop downward. Nomenclature for plants in the genus Datura is confusing.
Winter hardy to USDA Zone 9-11, but grown as annual in cooler climates.
In the ground, plants do best in rich, humusy, well-drained loams in full sun with regular moisture. Purchase plants from nurseries in spring or start seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before last spring frost. Set plants out after last frost date. Plants tend to sprawl, and are best spaced about 3’ apart unless staking or other support will be used. Deadheading flowers is not necessary. Harvest ripe seed for planting in the following spring.
Container plants may be cut back and overwintered indoors in a sunny window.

GERMINATION INSTRUCTIONS
Short cold moist stratification recommended.
***Starting Seeds indoors
Soak seeds in warm water overnight to rehydrate the seed before potting the seeds you can scrape away a little of the seed casing to increase germination levels and timings although this is something that does not need to be done. Please take care not to damage the seed embryo.
Fill a seed tray with a potting mix remembering that these plants love rich soil, something that will remain moist but NOT clumpy or water logged as heat and humidity is what these seeds need.
Make small holes in your potting mix & sow your seeds one seed per hole and cover with a thin layer of potting mix and gently water in.
Place on warm surface (Heat Mat / Propagator / Seed Starter) at around +21-+26C (70-80F).
Brugmansia can be a little slow to germinate and start anywhere from 3 to 6 Weeks. However once they start, they rapidly grow. They normally germinate without any problems.
Sometimes a little patience is required.
***Starting Seeds Outdoors
After the last frosts of the year around spring time you can sow your seeds directly into the ground or into garden pots and let nature do the rest. (information source: https://www.adeniumstore.com)
